In-Visible I 2010
PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES EXPLORING THE ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN PERPETUATING MISOGYNY
In-Visible I is a photographic project I started in 2010 as a critique of machismo in Mexico. Through powerful imagery, I examine how everyday language reinforces gender roles and perpetuates misogyny.
The photographs feature phrases like "You're whipped" or "All men are the same," expressions that, through repetition and normalization, shape the collective subconscious. I connect these messages to the concept of tattoos—symbols of identity and permanence—to encourage a reexamination of socially ingrained narratives. Since language not only describes reality but also shapes it, my project seeks to raise awareness of its profound influence.
With a print run of 8,000 copies in full-color offset on newsprint, I displayed the images in subway showcases and on public walls across Mexico City, seamlessly integrating art into urban life. Additionally, in certain locations, people could take an original artwork home for free, removing economic barriers and broadening access to art.
In-Visible I is an invitation to reflect on the power of language and its role in society, fostering relationships built on respect and equality.
