In-Visible II 2012
PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES EXPLORING THE ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN PERPETUATING MISOGYNY
In-Visible II is a series of ten photographs that explore the power of language in sustaining misogyny. In each image, I feature individuals from diverse backgrounds with sexist phrases tattooed onto their skin—expressions commonly used in their respective countries. Some are subtle, others overt, but all contribute to the normalization of a deeply ingrained misogynistic culture through repetition.
Phrases like “You cry like a girl” or “She’s my ball and chain” unconsciously shape perceptions, reinforcing discrimination and, in many cases, fueling violence. Through this project, I challenge viewers to reflect on how language influences our understanding of gender and identity, affecting everyone regardless of background.
Tattoos, symbols of identity and permanence, serve as a powerful visual metaphor—words etched onto the skin just as they imprint on the mind. Yet, just as tattoos can be erased, so too can ingrained sexist narratives, paving the way for a more equitable society.
By expanding this project internationally, I aim to highlight misogyny as a universal issue. Questioning the language we inherit is the first step toward reshaping the way we think—and ultimately, the world we live in.
