Take Time 2013
AN INTERVENTION TO SPARK DIALOGUE AMONG DISCONNECTED NEIGHBORS
For this intervention, I set up a table with two chairs and a sign inviting the public to participate by selecting a ticket with one of two options: "I have time" or "I lack time." Those who chose the first option sat down to converse with those who had picked the second, fostering dialogue between individuals who had time to spare and those who felt it slipping away.
In a fast-paced society where interactions have become increasingly superficial and communication is often filtered through social media, I wanted to create a space for genuine human connection. Through thoughtfully crafted questions designed to delve into personal experiences, I encouraged meaningful exchanges where participants shared their stories, emotions, and aspirations.
I also sought to strengthen the sense of community among those who frequent Jean Talon Market, inviting them to recognize each other as neighbors and cultivate bonds through conversation. Over the course of six hours, around 30 participants engaged in deep discussions, opening up about illness, social exclusion, aging, and unfulfilled dreams.
I carried out this intervention in Montreal, Canada, as part of the 100 Citizen Actions in a Day project during the summer of 2013.
